Avoid These Common Mistakes With Your Links...

Links are the main pillar of your website. To navigate from one page to another page in your website or to another website, you need to keep the links. You can also create page jumps in the same page or different pages of your website.

If your links are not working properly, it is difficult to navigate and your visitors get '404 File not Found Error'.

If your visitor wants to buy your product and clicks on your order link to found this '404' error, how would that be?

If you keep a free demo on your site for demonstration purpose to your visitor and your link doesn't work means, you are losing a potential customer.

So why don't you take a little bit more interest in creating your links? No matter where you are keeping them-your website, your emails,Autoresponder courses, banners etc.

***

1.Proper html format for the link:

Order here!

This is the basic format for keeping a link.

The URL is case sensitive.Though the 'www.yoursite.com' is not case sensitive, the 'order.html' part is case sensitive. So one typo...That's it. Nobody goes to your order page.

***

2.Always keep good content pages in first level directories. This keeps you in good ranking in search engines.

http://www.yoursite.com/one/two/page.html has less chances of crawled by search engines than http://www.yoursite.com/one/page.html.

***

3.Always check links by going to that pages. If you keep them in emails, then send them to your email address and check the link by yourself.

***

4.Participate in link exchanges:Search engines think that your site is popular when other sites point to your site. This keeps you in good positioning in search engines.

***

5.One common mistakes most people do is when they update the website and changed the html pages to another directory, they will forget to keep some sort of redirection to the new page.Especially true with important pages that has many links in it.

So people who bookmarked the old page can be redirected to new page.

***

6.Affiliate links:Most people are reluctant to click on the affiliate links. You have to hide them sometimes to get good click thru ratio.

Check out here: http://www.webmasters-central.com/t/siteprotection/affiliatelinks.shtml

***

7.Long URLs in the links:These tend to break when you send them in emails. When you click on them they don't send you to the page that you are supposed to.

You can use the above redirecting technique with short URLs.

***

8.If you are advertising about a particular product use the link that lands the visitor on the products page.Don't use your main website URL for everything.

***

9. Track your links in your ad campaigns: Well you want to know which campaign brought you profits. For this you should know howmany people clicked on your URL and how many bought your product. Here is a little, free script that you can use to track your urls in your campaign. http://www.scripts4webmasters.com/clicktracking/index.shtml

How To Turn Your Clients Into Raving Fans

So, you don't have a multi-million dollar advertising campaign? You don't have a staff of hundreds, venture capital backing or someone from Star Trek as your spokesperson? Then perhaps it's time to look into one of the advantages that you do have over these e-commerce giants... customer service.

You might wonder how a small company can hope to give better customer service than these heavily staffed, heavily funded e-giants. Believe it or not, it may be your lack of size, that just might give you the edge.

Think about your average customer service experience in an off-line setting. Where do you usually have the kinds of customer service experiences that are so positive, you come away raving to your friends and co-workers?

While I can't answer for you, I can tell you that the overwhelming majority of my experiences of this nature have come with small businesses, often very small. Conversely, I can also say that as a rule, my biggest customer service nightmares have come with the biggest companies.

Of course, there are always exceptions, but this theory has proven to be surprisingly consistent for me. I would bet that if you compile a quick mental list of your best and worst experiences as a customer, you might find this to be true for you as well.

The problem with large companies is usually a volume issue. Many of these businesses have such a large volume of customer service inquiries, that they simply don't have the manpower to adequately provide timely and efficient service. Often, it is difficult to even find the proper channel for which to take your customer service issue.

Large e-commerce companies aren't immune to these kinds of issues. In fact, they are often even less prepared to handle the flow of questions and comments that come in from their site on a daily basis. Many of these companies experience massive volume of traffic to their sites. A nice problem to have, but a problem that can often leave the customer out in the cold.

A recent Gartner study surveyed 50 top-rated internet retail sites on their customer service readiness and effectiveness. The results were very telling. Not one of these 50 sites ranked as excellent with regards to customer service readiness. 23% graded out as average, and 73% were rated below average, and 4% rated poor.

CNET quoted another recent study by Resource Marketing which showed similar results. "Wal-Mart online is a maze, Williams-Sonoma makes customers fill out applications every time they shop, and KBkids.com automatically sends new customers its electronic newsletter, whether they ask for it or not." Caroline Cofer, a spokesperson for Resource Marketing added that many of these large merchants are "making some scary mistakes."

Now, with many of these large e-tailers streamlining operations in order to stay afloat, it is difficult to imagine customer service improving. In fact, customer service issues on-line have become such an issue, that an entire sector has evolved to deal with the problems. Companies such as Egain Communications and Kana Communications offer automated, CRM (customer relation management) solutions. Many of these automated services are ASP (application service provider) models that feature multi-channel response e-mail systems.

In other words, software that attempts to emulate a real human. On one hand, these companies should be admired for their vision, and will probably be rewarded with booming sales. On the other hand, the technology has a way to go before it is a replacement for human interaction.

Have you ever sent a question to a site's customer service center, and received the answer to the wrong question? More than likely, this was the result of automated CRM software that was unable to properly interpret your question and send the correct response.

This is where your advantage as a small company comes into play. While you may not enjoy the volume of these sites, you can create a higher percentage of repeat visitors/buyers with superior customer service. Generally, when you hear people talk about improving customer service, you hear things like: "make yourself available" and "give good contact information." This is true, but it goes beyond that.

What people really want is speed. People want their questions answered now. People want their customer service issue resolved in a hurry. Providing a phone number is a must, but chances are, people don't want to go off-line and call you for the answers to their questions unless it is a last resort. In the e-world, people want an i-response: Immediate, internet response.

Of course, you can't be everywhere at once. Managing a small business or website is already a full-time job. But making customer service a focal point of your website can pay immense dividends for your traffic and or profit. Think of it this way, if you can respond to a customer's question within 24 hours, you are beating about 50% of the large e-companies already.

If you can respond within 12 hours, I would estimate that you would be beating somewhere around 80%. If you can respond within 6 hours, you are providing customer service that most e-commerce giants only dream about.

A quick list of ways to improve your customer service:

1. Speed!

We all know as customers, that few things are more valuable to us than time. Standing in line is no fun at the supermarket, and waiting for a response from a customer service center is no fun either.

2. Contact information.

Make it easy to find. Make it an address that you or an employee checks on a regular basis. Don't make the customer work to find you.

3. Live chat.

Offer your customers the opportunity to use instant messaging software to contact you. MSN Messenger and ICQ are two widely used formats that work on almost all platforms, and it's 100% free.

4. F.A.Q and search options.

Make them thorough. Not all sites need F.A.Q (frequently asked questions) pages, but if your site does, then make it thorough and easy to understand. If your site has an search box, be sure that it gives adequate results. Test it out. It's surprising how many high-profile websites have inadequate in-site search functions.

5. Your customer is always right.

We all know that this is bull, but, the old adage still stands the test of time. Whether or not the customer is "right," our job as customer service managers is to put out fires. Quick, pleasant responses to even the most irate customers will almost always cool the situation. In fact, an efficient customer service agent can turn even the most irate customer into a loyal customer.

Take the work out of it for your visitors. Encourage them to ask questions and reward them with quick, friendly responses. Your customers and visitors are the most important asset you have. Make them feel that way!

How To Quickly Make Money With Your Website?

Quickly making money with a website is the dream of all new online marketers but can it be done and if so how is it done. This article tells what I did in order to start making money in less than 3 weeks with a brand new website in the competitive insurance industry.

The first step I took was to decide on a particular industry. Unlike many of the experts that advocate selecting a niche in order to exploit it, I choose the subjects for my websites based on the popularity of the subject matter in terms of consumer interest and of course profitability. For this particular website I chose to concentrate on insurance. This subject is very competitive and can be difficult to score well on in the search engines but to be honest that wasn’t my goal. Instead for every website I make I focus on having it make between $500 and $1000 within 6 months. The methods I use have made it possible to achieve this standard on 3 previous websites so I felt like I could do the same with insurance.

I want to set the story straight so it is only fair that I disclose the software platform that I use to make my websites. I currently make my websites using Site Build It. The features for this program are to numerous to mention in this article and I don’t want to focus on them here. I believe that you can still achieve a profitable website within a short timeframe using other software just not as fast as when using SBI.

As I stated earlier I set my sites on the insurance industry because the keyword bids are fairly high for advertisers of insurance products. You can find this type of information on Overture or if you have a Google Adwords account. Again I won’t go into specifics on how to do that research as it has been covered by other webmasters in better detail then I could describe.

I decided to set my website up to include all areas of insurance. With that in mind I created web pages for car insurance, home insurance, life insurance, health insurance and several other insurance categories. After setting up my main categories I concentrated on making web pages that point to the main category. For instance if my main category is car insurance and I have a web page built for it then I would make other pages such as California car insurance which point back to my main page on car insurance.

Here’s the tricky part normally I spend around 2 hours a night working on my website. That may sound like a lot of time to some people but I assure you, if you want to succeed you will find the time. Trust me – I work 13-14 hours a day at my main job, have 2 children under the age of 4 and am finishing up work on my Master’s degree. If I can find 2 extra hours a day anybody can. Use the desire to someday be your own boss and have enough money to be comfortable as your motivation to make it happen.

Typically what I do during that two hours includes the following: Make at least 1 or 2 new insurance web pages for my website, write 2 new articles and submit them to other websites that accept articles and try to find 2-3 new link exchange partners. The key piece that has allowed me to quickly make money on my websites in less then 3 weeks involves the articles. Every article I write links back to my website with a link in my signature box. The impact that 20 or more articles linking back to a website become evident when the website starts making money due to the articles.

The best technique I have found to quickly make money online is to use Google Adsense on your web pages. The ads generated by the Google code along with any insurance merchants you affiliate with will be the cornerstone of your money making website. The initial amount of money a website will make may not be much in the first few months but the ability to make money in less then 3 weeks is a fantastic motivator which allows a webmaster to stay focused in order to continue to work on a website until the larger dollar amounts start rolling in. From my experiences this usually starts happening around the 6 month mark.

The above article is rather sketchy on specifics but it truly is the format I follow for all of my websites and I continue to make money very quickly which soon grows to a sizeable amount within 6 months.

How are Directories Different from Search Engines?

Directories are important to your ranking and success with Search Engines. In a nutshell, search engines are completely automated and usually there is no need to submit. Directories all have human editors who review your site and you do have to submit to them to be listed. But you must submit the right way or you are wasting your time.

If you think getting listed in search engines is slow, try directories. Getting listed in directories takes time but it is well worth it.

One of the good things about getting listed in directories is that Google puts a LOT of weight on sites that are listed in directories. DMOZ is the most important one to Google (and therefore should be the most important one to you).

Junk sites can get listed in the search engines, but try getting a junk site past one of the human directory editors. You can't even get useful sites that are poorly designed past the "eagle eyed" directory editors. Maybe that's why Google puts so much weight on sites that have achieved the status of being listed in directories.

There are a LOT of directories, but there are only a few that you should bother with now.

Here are the major directories

www.DMOZ.org -- Free. Submit to DMOZ first. (DMOZ is also called "Open Directory Project" on their website). They take a LONG time to get your site listed, but do NOT resubmit or your site will go back to the bottom of the stack. To find out about the status of your site getting listed go to www.Resource-Zone.com and ask questions in the discussion forum directly to the DMOZ editors.

www.Gimpsy.com -- Free or pay $20 for 72 hr. inclusion and higher ranking for 90 days.

www.JoeAnt.com -- Pay $39.99 or become an editor and it's free. All editor applications are automatically approved. I suggest you become an editor. You'll learn a lot.

www.GoGuides.org -- Pay $39.99 or become a "guide" (same as editor for other Directories) and it's free.

www.Business.com -- $99 a year, but well worth it if you sell your products to businesses. You'll get a lot of interested and qualified traffic.

www.Yahoo.com -- Yahoo is no longer worth the $299 a year fee in my opinion. Skip this one.

Here's how to get listed in these major directories. Of course, you have to submit your URL to the directory to get listed, but before you do that consider the following steps: Don't jump the gun and submit a site that is under construction.

Make sure your site is well designed, easy to use, has useful content, no spam, no tricks, no broken links, etc. A human editor is in charge of "widgets" and she wants all of the sites in her widgets section of the directory to be useful to the directory visitors.

By all means spend a LOT of time reading the instruction of each directory before you submit. Don't rush to submit your site until you understand what the directory is looking for and how they want you to do it.

Your directory title and description are very important to getting your site listed in the directory. They are also important after you're listed. Your title and description are what potential visitors to your site will see in the directory listings.

Here are some tips for writing your title and description for directories.

Do NOT use any marketing hype (Never use words like "best"). Stick to the facts. Be descriptive. Choose your most importnant keyword phrase, but don't try to stuff a lot of keywords in your title and description. Tricks will kill your chances of getting listed. The human editor has to like you and your site before your site will get listed. So follow the rules!

The most important thing to do is to submit your site in the right category. Drill down to the most specific category you can. Look at your competitors. What category are they in? Look at the sites that are in the category you choose. Look at their titles and descriptions.

You want to follow these examples, but you don't want to be exactly like these sites. Directories don't want sites that contain basically identical information to what's already in the directory.

As soon as your site is completed submit it to DMOZ and get the clock to start ticking. A listing in DMOZ will automatically get you listed in the Google search engine and in the Google directory.

Of course, you can get listed in the Google search engine much quicker by having incoming links from other sites, so don't wait on DMOZ to get you listed in the Google Search Engine. Do depend on it to get you listed in the Google Directory.

A lot of people say they don't want to spend the effort trying to get listed in the directories because it could take three months. (I've seen it get done in one month, but sometimes it has taken six months.) I know people who said this over a year ago. They could have had a much higher PageRank and a LOT more free traffic by now if they had spent a few hours back then submitting their sites to the directories.

Some people make things happen. Some people watch things happen and some people wonder what happened. You have to make things happen if you want to get high rankings in the search engines.

The Power of Link Exchanges

Let's face it. Getting webmasters to link to your site is difficult.

But a good linking strategy is necessary to build link popularity - a measure of the popularity of a website based on the number of other website's linking to it. And at the same time it has become very difficult to compete on the internet with websites that have 1000s of backlinks, sites that have their carefully chosen anchor text firmly in place.

So let's do the math. If you as a webmaster were to gain one new link to your site every day for one year you would only have 365 backlinks. Even with a more optimistic 2 links a day we are still only talking about 730 links. They may seem like a lot but in the real world of the internet and depending on the keywords you are competing for, you may need hundreds or even thousands more.

Why? Because link popularity is the ultimate tool in achieving ranking. Link popularity is measured by the number and quality of inbound links to your site. The more you increase the link popularity of your web site, the probability of maintaining a higher search engine position for a longer period of time becomes more likely. Inbound links help to attain high search engine rankings for your web site, while producing traffic from visitors clicking through on the links themselves.

So you have a dilemma. You need hundreds maybe even thousands of inbound links to your site. But how can one individual possibly achieve this goal given the numbers of backlinks needed and the hours it takes to accomplish such a task?

There is only one solution. A link exchange. The only effective way to get the sheer amount of backlinks needed to compete is to coop with other webmasters in a large group and share the wealth of pages that is owned by the group. It is similar to risk management. You utilized the power of large numbers of people.

Link exchanges are sites that bring webmasters together to cooperate in the exchange of links for the benefit building both pagerank and link popularity. They are commonly used to gain link popularity which will increase ranking in search engines like Yahoo! or Google. Both of these engines use link popularity as a factor in calculating web pages ranking in the search engine results. One such link exchange, http://www.digitalpoint.com/tools/ad-network/?s=4380, is just one of the many sites that will help you accomplish your inbound link goals.

Be very careful to choose the correct anchor text when signing up to a link exchange. Anchor text is the text within the hyperlink. The major search engines look carefully at this text to help determine what your page is about. For example if there are 1000 pages linking to yours with the words "buy a car" then you will likely do very well when someone uses the search phrase "buy a car". Simple huh?

An example of the power of anchor text is what is known as a "google bomb". If enough sites link to a specific website with the same anchor text then that site will rank well for that term regardless of whether the keywords are even found on the page.

Remember to let the other webmasters painstakingly search out the individual reciprocal linking partners while you and I harness the power of large numbers of webmasters by using a link exchange.

How to Get Hundreds of Links to Your Site

If you are website owner and you have begun exchanging links, you know how time consuming -- and time-wasting -- it can be. On the other hand, you don't want to give up on the process because you might actually unearth the occasional valuable link partner.

After all, you know that getting links to your site is important because it brings in traffic, helps you find strategic partners, and enhances your Search Engine rankings. Your objective is to get hundreds of links, and you cannot get the job done unless you have a strategy that works.

First you have to accept that not all links are created equal. And that means that link partners have to be prioritized. Some are worthless because your links end up on pages that nobody looks at and have no PR. But at the other end of the spectrum a few of your link partners will be very valuable because they will give you links on high value, high traffic pages.

Most of the rest of your inbound links will be marginally valuable. How you tell the difference between the valuable ones and the useless ones is the subject of many discussions and articles about search engine optimization and website promotion.

Different types of prospective link partners

One solution is to put prospective link partners into three categories of importance or "levels". This assumes that you have already rejected those that have negative value -- the sites you don't want to identify with for various reasons -- pornography, violence, racism, pharmaceuticals, and so on. Here is a suggestion for three levels of prospective link partners:

Level 1 - Basic Links

Basic links will often be from sites you have not taken a lot of time to study. There is nothing striking about them from your point of view, so they probably do not have significant positive value for your site.

On the other hand they will not have negative value either. Therefore, if exchanging links with these partners can be done efficiently, there is no downside to doing it. These will usually be "reciprocal" partners and can be given links on properly formed "link directory pages". The more time and effort you put into your directory, the more valuable it will become.

Level 2 - Self-Generated Multi-Links

The second category consists of "multi-links" that you generate yourself. You do this by seeding your articles, forum posts, blog entries and so on, around the web. Many of the strategies used to create these links are discussed in the "Power Linking" section of the Linknet Marketing Resource Library, and in the free linking strategy course, mentioned at the end of this article.

Level 3 - High Value Links

The third and most valuable category consists of "High Value Links" on sites that you specifically target. These include high traffic sites in your area of interest, highly rated directories, and sites where you can get a number of quality links all at once. In some cases these links will bring you lots of traffic. In other cases they will enhance your PR and Search Engine ranking. You need both kinds.

As I mention in other articles and in my free course, there are many strategies to get these "Level 3" links. For instance,

Write glowing testimonials - Target 10 or 20 high traffic sites in your area of interest, and send your testimonial to the webmaster. Usually they can't resist publishing it where everybody will see it.

Write positive reviews of sites or products - Target 10 or 20 high traffic sites. Post the reviews on your site or in your blog, and make sure to send a copy to the webmaster of the reviewed site. Again, most webmasters or online entrepreneurs are hungry for this kind of exposure.

You might even create a "review" section on your site to show you are serious. But be honest in your reviews. Do not endorse products you have not actually looked at or tried out. Unfortunately, many affiliate marketers are guilty of this.

Find "volume" link partners - This is the fastest, most direct, and least time-consuming strategy. Find link partners who will either sell or trade text ads on a number of high value pages. Just do a Google search for "buy links" or "exchange links" and you will find many companies and web owners prepared to offer multiple-link packages.

Create a three level strategy to find valuable link partners, and then work the strategy with diligence and persistence. This kind of program is guaranteed to generate quality link partners who will help build the success of your website.

Are You SURE Your Link Partners Still Link to You?

It’s a fact. While most link partners are scrupulously honest a few are little more than link scam artists. They’ll take a link from you to them. Put up your link back. But then when you’re not looking take yours down.

They win. You lose.

Now I’m not saying this happens a lot. But it does happen. And if you’re the type this would irritate, you’ve got to have a way to keep your link partners honest.

You do so by monitoring your links. Not like a neurotic every day - unless you want to. But more like a checking the oil in your car. Maybe once a month. Or every six weeks. You know just to keep things on the up and up?

Now sure, if you’ve got nothing better to do, you can do this checking by hand.

• Keep a list of link partners.

• Note the page your link appears on.

• One by one go to the sites, scan the page and eyeball your link. Up front and personal.

Of course if you’re like me, you’re constantly running out of day before running out of work.

Besides why do it the hard way when there are some ready made, inexpensive or free even, tools to automate the task for you? Some are loaded with features with a price to match. Others do one thing and do it well - monitor your links.

====> The Candidates

Link Check Pro http://www.link-check.net/

Reciprocal Link Monitor http://caribbean-marketing.net/reciprocal/

Reciprocal Link Checker 1.0 http://www.rebrandsoftware.com/showsoftware2.asp?soft_id=18

Reciprocal Manager http://reciprocalmanager.com/

Automatic Link Checker http://www.softbizscripts.com/automatic-link-checker-script-features.php

Reciprocal Link Spider http://www.recip-links.com/

Now you can scurry off and check out each of these and try to decide which might be right for you.

Or if you prefer I can make it easy for you

====> The Envelope Please…

My favorite and the one I use is Reciprocal Link Monitor.

I like this one because it runs on your desktop, it’s brain dead simple to use and it’s sole mission in life is to monitor links. Even better since it’s been sold with reprint rights it can be found online dirt cheap.

It’s so easy to use my 80 year old dad could almost do it.

All you do is create a text file of the URLs where your link is supposed to be. (If you’ve got more than one site then create one for each.)

Import that text file into Reciprocal Link Monitor.

Add the exact URL you want it to find on your partners page.

Then unleash Reciprocal Link Monitor and let the software do it’s thing.

No muss. No fuss. Check as often as you like.

====> The Runner Up…

Like a junk yard dog Automatic Link Checker is ever vigilant. Ever watchful.

What some may especially like about this one is it automatically checks your links for you DAILY. And sends you a report of what it does or doesn’t find.

Plus it’s cheap.

Even better the brilliant minds behind Automatic Link Checker will install it for peanuts.

If you admire constant vigilance, then this one is for you.

====> The Deal Beyond the Deal

But wait. There’s a second application here we don’t want to overlook.

You see, while it’s proper protocol to let your new links partner know you put their link up, you’ll soon discover not everyone can be bothered. Leaving that little pain-in-the-neck task of verification up to you.

Well, let’s eliminate it. Here’s how…

When on the prowl for new links (and you are nearly every day, right?) create a list of the links pages of recent link solicitations. Quickly check them with Reciprocal Link Monitor. That’s right let the software check for the presence or absence of new links each day or two. This way you’ll be aware of new links whether your new partner lets you know or not.

So this is how you can rest easy and KNOW for sure that your link partners still link back to your site. I’ll leave it up to you to decide what to do with those link rustlers who once did but now don’t.

Track or Perish

Who me? Track?

Now I realize some turn a blind eye towards tracking results on their site. Either preferring to look the other way or perhaps asking Stevie Wonder to watch over it for them. Because apparently their attitude is if they've got money coming in, well, how bad can it be?

Dunno. And if you don't want to maximize the cash flow from your site I suppose that's between you and Stevie.

But if you're not tracking what's working on your site, you're flying blind. Maybe even leaving serious money on the table. Because how can you improve if you have nothing to compare to?

Sorry for the heavy dose of reality. But remember this. You can have more traffic than Google but if it doesn't convert what good is it?

Take for example that hot site that streams a hilarious cartoon poking fun at John Kerry and George W Bush. It was created by two brothers who happened to be on Jay Leno the other night.

They revealed to Jay they had had 20 million hits to their site.

The brothers also confessed their plan to accept donations to support their work generated all of, you ready for this, $1000!

You read that right. 20 million hits converted into all of $1000 in cold…hard…cash.

How much traffic did they waste? My guess? Tons. So as you can see traffic isn’t always the answer.

Now before I trip the Digression Alarm Buzzer, by tracking I mean monitoring various conversion rates for key pages on your site. In order of importance here's what you want to track.

=====> Sales Pages

Since sales letters are where the rubber meets the road for sure you want stats for them. How many unique visitors hit such pages every day? Of those how many convert? Divide the second number by the first and you've got your conversion rate. Pretty simple right? Depending on your price point, anything less than 1% is probably unsatisfactory.

Watching the day to day conversion fluctuation isn't necessarily the best use of your time. But monitoring that on a week to week basis might be. As any downward trend might indicate problems ahead.

=====> Affiliate Product Review Pages

Assuming you sell affiliate products, either as an add on or your primary profit producer, again you want to see which ones best convert to sales.

Those that are your best sellers, like your top 10 to be completely uncreative, you might feature prominently on your home page. Spend time optimizing their pages. Link t o them from other internal pages of your site to get each some PR and link rep to help it rank higher.

Products that don't convert as well you can let ride, demote in terms of emphasis on your site or eliminate altogether.

=====> Special Pages

That might be your ezine sign up page. Maybe the auto responder course you offer in exchange for an email address page. Or any sort of activity that can lead to sale - THAT you want to track. For instance the page on my site that falls into this category is the quiz page that shows in the sig file below.

I like to see how many unique visitors stop by. I know how many took it. Again I calculate the percent of conversion. I continually try to make it as inviting as possible so as many as possible take it.

=====> Content Pages

No need for anything fancy here. You may just want to see which are the most popular pages on your site.

Why? Perhaps you can get clues for future products. Or two, you could always slip in a mention plus a link to your sales letter from the popularity contest winners. Might as well bring it up and suggest visitors stop by, no?

Now you can track a number of ways. There are some commercial programs that are quite robust.

But I use a $45 cgi script - Prolinkz. [http://prolinkz.com] And don't worry it's super simple to install.

So as not to be accused of flogging a product let me simply say all you do is stick a 1 by 1 pixel on the page you want track, set up a unique tracking code for that page and Prolinkz does the rest. No muss. No fuss.

Anyway, continuous improvement is the way to better than average success. Online or off. Tracking is how you get there. And if you don't track? you risk perishing. Because how can you improve what you don't measure?

Is Your Website Content Worth Reading or Obvious Search Engine Bait?

Webmasters are always looking for ways to increase their traffic and exposure. This is natural and will never change. No one is ever content with their traffic levels.

But problems arise with this reality as well. While it is good to be motivated to get as much traffic as possible, it is tempting to try and cut corners and use tactics that are temporary rather than permanent solutions.

And there are myriad tactics that can take your entire business down the tubes as well. The trick is not to be tempted with short-term gain over long-term income from your web business.

Many webmasters are aware that "content is king" and that you have to brand your site to make sales and build credibility. But most people only take these facts at face value and only as they pertain to the search engines. Big mistake.

Your content is your lifeblood for more reasons than search engine placement. This is your "face" on the net.

So if you're using new strategies to bring in more targeted traffic, make sure you don't use something that could kill your business just to get some short term traffic.

Many people are putting article directories on their sites these days. Having a set of articles on your site is great for building credibility and making more sales, if you do it right.

But as is always the case, I see people taking that to the extreme and missing the point entirely. Now I see some webmasters completely emptying out the big article directories like GoArticles.com to put hundreds or even thousands of articles on their sites.

With no editorial review they just take the whole category their site fits in best and grab up any and all articles in it. Remember, anyone can get into an article directory whether they can write or not. Whether they are an expert or not. Want those guys on your site representing you?

I have a smaller article directory than most people at http://webmastertraffictools.com/articledirectory/

Why so small? Because I review each and every article that is submitted there. There is a very good reason for this.

To get someone to first visit your site takes money and time. Once you have them there it is easier to get them back if you impress them.

Whatever methods of temporary website promotion you use, you have to keep in mind that you want something that will work for you for years, not months. Therefore, if all you ever do is troll for temporary traffic you will ALWAYS be promoting as hard as you are today. Wasn't part of the reason you started working online to work less and make more?

Me, I want to have a network of sites that eventually promote themselves so I can spend the rest of my life on vacation. If you don't start laying down the foundation of that kind of system, you are never going to be able to retire with your site(s) supporting you.

Putting up content for content's sake is redundant. Other people's content is already on hundreds of other pages.

You don't stand out in the crowd that way alone. It is temporary at best if it works at all for you, and once people get to your site and realize you have harvested all your content from a directory they have already read through, you've made an enemy, not a customer out of them.

AND if you were unscrupulous enough to even reprint articles from people who spammed that directory with ads, poor english, poor advice, and everything else, I guarantee your visitors are leaving your site with no respect for you, whatever you sell, and with a deep hatred of "sites like yours" on the net.

That is not a long-term plan for a web business. See what I mean by temporary? No repeat traffic is no business at all.

So while my article directories are smaller, they have timely, relevant content from expert authors who can spell and who really spent time on their pieces.

Therefore I get repeat traffic, more clicks on ads, more sales of products, and a real income from that directory that will last as long as I own the site.

Points to Ponder:

1. Content is not king. GOOD content is king.

2. Repeat business is cheaper than new business.

3. Your name and brand are the only thing of singular value and importance to you on the web.

4. And short-term solutions to getting in the engines are always just that: short-term

Someday, if you are one of the webmasters I talked about above who only see the short-term picture, you are going to get tired of all the work you have to constantly do to keep traffic coming in.

And the worst part is, since you will have no foundation to rely on when you need a break, you won't be able to take one. If your focus on website promotion is always on short campaigns and tricking search engines temporarily into thinking your site is of actual value, once you stop what you're doing (probably from sheer burnout) your income also stops.

But if you have the foresight to build a base for your internet business, and you pay attention to and have standards for the kind of content you put up, you will be able to walk away from your business from time to time and the traffic and interest will still be there.

For me it is unthinkable to base my entire business on temporary solutions for getting traffic and sales when, if you have seen what you can make in the short term, why not get set up to reap those rewards for life?

But that's just me. I profit greatly from people doing it the other way. Simply because when someone comes to my site and sees content of value, they feel as though they have found an oasis in a desert of trash. A place they will visit more than twice and gladly bookmark.

You can figure out the value of that kind of response for yourself, as it pertains to your business in particular.

Between the two choices, I'll take repeat and recommended traffic over fly-by-night, angry, resentful traffic any day of the week!

How To Obtain Free Advertising For Your Online Business

The beauty of the Internet is that it allows you to run a business with very little money. The secret is knowing which of the available free resources are worth your time! Register with Search Engines Submitting your online business to search engines is one of the easiest, fastest, and least expensive ways to promote your site. Tens of millions of people use the major search engines every day to navigate around the Internet and quickly find what they are looking for. Statistics show that 85% of pages visited on the Internet come from people who have gotten there from a search engine. While you shouldn’t rely on search engines alone to bring you qualified traffic, this is definitely a good way to kick off your marketing efforts.

There are no easy tricks or secret formulas for optimum search engine placement, but the following five tips should help make your job easier and increase your chances of getting high search engine rankings.

1. Do it Yourself. You should avoid using auto-submission services that promise to register your site at hundreds of major search engines for a small fee. There are only a handful of search engines that really count and a number of the majors use the same database. Thus, you can register on one and show up on several of them. The experts in the field agree that you are much better off taking the extra time to learn as much as you can about the major search engines and manually registering your site with each one to ensure you get the best listing possible.

2. Less is More. You may be tempted to think that it is to your advantage to try to get listed on as many sites as possible, but this is simply not the case. The major search engines will drive over 90% of your website traffic if you are listed within the top 3 pages of keyword results. Additionally, don’t try to promote every page of your site. Almost every search engine will crawl through your entire site indexing all of its pages. If you have a large website and promote all of your pages, some engines will consider it spamming and reject your submissions.

3. Get your site linked from other sites. Identify other sites that offer complementary services, which are likely to be of interest to users of your site; link to them and invite them to reciprocate. In particular, do this with popular sites and do it with those sites that appear near the top of searches that use the keyword phrases that you are targeting.

4. Don’t Get Too Comfortable. Granted, a good listing on a top search engine is a pretty exciting thing. But don’t expect it to last forever. The good search engines are constantly re-evaluating their lists and crawling the web to ensure their rankings are as current and valid as possible. Also, hundreds of new sites are being submitted daily which could cause yours to get pushed down the list if a better one comes along. You need to keep a constant watch on your listing to make sure it stays at the top of the list.

5. Don’t Expect Too Much Even if you do everything exactly right, there’s still no guarantee that you’ll get a good placement on search engines, or that your intended target audience will find you there. Few people truly understand how they work, and even if you’re lucky enough to figure it out, they’ll change the process on you as soon as you do. To make matters worse, many engines and directories are notoriously slow to add your listing, taking up to 4 weeks or longer to add your URLs to their database. Some directories limit the number of listings, so you may never get listed or you may get bumped after a short period of time. Many search engines prune their lists periodically as well.

The bottom line is that, while registering your site on search engines is a critical first step in promoting your site, the process is seldom enough to generate a significant number of quality visits to your home on the web.

Be sure to supplement your search engine marketing with other online and offline promotional efforts, such as those described in this article. Reciprocal Links and Web Rings. A reciprocal link is represented by two web sites who hyperlink to each other. The best reciprocal links are from sites that share content or interests similar to yours. The reason is that you want to draw as much traffic as possible from the linking site and, likewise, want to provide as much traffic as possible to the linking site. It’s a win-win situation where both sites experience an increase in traffic. Here’s how you go about arranging a link. Identify sites that have similar content or interests to yours. For each site, send an e-mail suggesting that both your sites could benefit from a reciprocal link.

Here’s an example of an effective email:

Dear Webmaster,

I just visited your Web site at www.whatever.com. I have to say that I was very impressed by what I saw. Congratulations on developing an attractive, professional and informative site. I am the webmaster at www.mywebsite.com. We are currently looking to increase the number of links to our site via reciprocal arrangements with other quality sites, such as yours. At present we are getting around 300 hits per day and we are now seriously looking to expand on that. If you think that you might be interested in doing a link or banner exchange please look over our site. If you are interested, you could even go straight to our links page, where we have our own banner, plus some text about ourselves, which you could use if you decided to link to us. That’s at: www.mywebsite.com/links.htm. I feel this would be win-win situation for both of us and could potentially increase traffic significantly to both our sites. If you are interested, please reply to this email and include a graphic banner, of standard dimensions and/or some text that you like to have appear on our links page. Also, let us know which URL you would like us to link to. I very much look forward to hearing back from you and hopefully establishing a mutually rewarding link exchange. Thanks for your consideration, Your Name and contact information

You’ll be pleasantly surprised how many people are anxious to increase their traffic and will agree to this type of parternship.

If you do manage to develop a marketing partnership with another site, it is very worthwhile trying to form a web ring. A web ring is really not much more than a group of like-minded and linked sites. Traffic can be hard to win, especially in the early days of your site, and by getting a web ring established you will find that is relatively easy to share what traffic you get amongst the other cooperating sites. It is really quite effective and is now a popular and established way of boosting traffic to your site. Ezines & Email Newsletters

1. Writing for Ezines: Right now there’s a shortage of good e-zine (short for e-mail magazines or newsletters) articles. So, if you write well and you know how to do research on the Internet, there’s a huge market waiting for you. Pick a topic that you know something about and then go to the Search Engines and find as many Web sites as you can that deal with that subject. Make a note of any URLs that offer resources dealing with the topic of your article. Include those URLs in your article. Keep your article short. One or two pages is fine. Tell readers how to do something that will interest many of them. Keep sentences short, informal, and talk directly to the reader. If you don’t feel comfortable with your writing skills, have a local English teacher or journalism student look over your article for you. At the end of your article, attach a 5-6 line ‘Resource Box’ that includes your Web site URL and/or your email address. Because you won’t get paid for your article, publishers don’t mind allowing you a personal plug at the end. The article makes you look like an expert in your field. Your contact info at the end urges thousands of impressed readers to contact the expert.

2. Create Your Own E-Zines: Better yet, consider producing your own company e-zine or newsletter. Nothing creates sales like your own Internet community. E-mail newsletters are a great way to build your Internet community and allow you to position yourself as a knowledgeable and helpful expert in the field. Subscribers come to see you as someone they know and can trust. E-mail newsletters are easy to produce and cost almost nothing. People on the Internet are usually in a hurry, so keep your e-zine short. One or two articles coupled with two or three short ads may be all your e-zine needs. Keep lines short enough to fit into an e-mail browser and put a hard return at the end of each line (to keep them from breaking up when e-mailed). For starters, you can send your e-zine out with your favorite e-mail program. Later, when your subscriber list grows, you may want to upgrade to a majordomo provided, most likely, by the same company that provides your web site space. Get subscribers by placing free ads on classified sites, ads in appropriate newsgroups, and announcing your new e-zine to firms that specialize in keeping track of various lists of subscribers.

Be sure to mention your new e-mail newsletter in all your print and broadcast advertising and add a place for people to subscribe on your web site. Your subscriber list can easily grow to include a few thousand within a year. An audience that size will be a continuing source of sales, contacts, and insights. Developing a thriving subscriber base means promoting your newsletter prominently on your Web site and elsewhere. A simple, text-based link exhorting visitors to “Sign up for our newsletter” will attract only the bare minimum of attention. Instead, consider a graphic or side-bar that speaks to the benefits of the newsletter - for example: “Get the latest e-business news in your inbox FREE.”

Forum Networking: There are many discussion forums on the Internet, on every topic you could possibly imagine. Most discussion boards allow posters to attach a “Signature” with their post containing additional information about themselves, such as their name, URL and sometimes even an advertisement. By visiting a few forums regularly and participating in the discussions, asking and answering questions, you can build up trust with other forum members, whilst at the same time getting free exposure for your website. Just try to make a useful contribution to the forum - be sure to read the forum rules and don’t SPAM! Referral Marketing Encourage happy customers to tell their friends about your business.

This is a great way to build your customer base, year after year, through the power of the ‘snowball’ effect—a happy customer tells a friend, who tells a friend, etc. Referrals also tend to be easier to convert into paying customers because your product has been ‘endorsed’ by someone they know and trust. You can offer incentives such as discounts or a free gift to encourage referrals. Regardless of whether or not the referred party makes a purchase, be sure to thank your customer for the referral—reward his behavior and he’ll be more inclined to repeat it. Banner Advertising: Recent statistics show that 80% of advertisers use banner advertising and 18 of every 25 online ads created by advertisers are banner ads (ISP Cyberstats). Knowing how and where to place banner ads is a key factor in an online advertising campaign. For small businesses that don’t have a large budget to devote to online advertising, a focused and effective approach to getting the most exposure for the least amount of money is essential. A simple search on Google or similar search engine will turn up numerous places where you can purchase banner advertising space. However, if your goal is to uncover free advertising resources, you should consider the following two sources:

1. Banner Exchange Services Perhaps the easiest, and certainly the cheapest, way to utilize banner advertising is by participating in banner exchange networks. These networks, such as “http://www.megatraffic.biz” , allow smaller sites to leverage the power of the Web by displaying each others’ ads in a cooperative fashion. In addition to providing a no-cost linking opportunity, these networks typically generate highly targeted traffic to your site and extend viewership to audiences you may not otherwise be able to reach.

2. Trading Banners with Other Sites: When you visit a site that you think could send you good, qualified traffic, just drop a note to the webmaster and see if he/she/it wants to swap banner advertising. Tell them where you propose to put their banner on your site, and suggest a page on their site that might make for good placement for you. Be very polite and offer a fair trade. Explain something about your site and why you think it would benefit both sites to swap. How to Design Effective Banner Advertising Designers face a number of challenges when creating Internet banner advertisements. You have a very small space - usually about 468 pixels wide by 60 pixels high - in which to convey your message. That message has to be legible, and it has to catch the reader’s eyes on what is often a very busy page, all while keeping file size to a minimum. That’s a lot to ask from such a small graphic! Fortunately, you can follow these five easy guidelines to create ads that are catchy, effective, and easy to make.

1. Use the words “Click Here” or “Enter” every time you design a banner. You may think that these two words are overused online, but tests have proven that these words are able to increase the effectiveness of a banner ad by 20-30% without changing anything else in the banner. They inspire the reader to click on the ad if the headline of the banner interests them.

2. Animate Your Banners. An animated banner will increase your banner ads effectiveness by 30-40%. The key in using animation in your banner is keeping it small. The reason that you don’t want big pictures or images that look like live video in your banners is the fact that the banner will load too slowly on people’s pages. The visitors just won’t see it.

3. Use an awesome headline in your banner. Don’t think that just having a good looking banner will make people click through. The key to effective banner advertising is having a good headline. A good technique to use is to keep the same headline on your banner ad that you have on your entry page. Then when they click through the banner, they will come to see the same headline that sparked an interest in them in the first place.

4. It is often a good idea to use your web site address or some type of company logo in the banner. Don’t focus your banner on your logo or web site address, but do include it in many cases. Your main benefit headline should be the focus of your banner. Your use of a web address or company logo in a small section of the banner just helps to produce a branding effect on people’s minds giving you a few extra hits.

5. Use banner text wisely. Use a simple font in the largest possible size and capitalize the first letter of every word. If your text takes more than two seconds to read, you’ve got too many words. Either edit the copy down or consider adding another frame. Too much text overwhelms viewers, and they’ll be less likely to read it.

Traffic Exchanges: One method of getting targeted traffic to your site is through the traffic or hit exchanges. When used properly, they can be a great source of targeted visitors. Put simply, a traffic exchange is a facility that you can use to get hits to your site in exchange for viewing other people’s sites. The way traffic exchanges work are very simple. When you first visit a traffic exchange website, you will be asked to register. Usually when you register you receive free credits just for signing up. When you login for the first time, you should add your sites into the exchange. Traffic exchanges work by crediting per the amount of traffic you bring to other sites on the network. This can be through your own surfing, referral traffic, or even by purchasing site visits. Most exchanges offer free and paid memberships, with paid members of course obtaining more perks and potentially more targeted traffic.

The thing with hit exchanges is that you’ve got to know how to use them, otherwise your results will be disappointing. But if you apply these four strategies, you may be pleasantly surprised. 1. Create a special page for the traffic exchanges. A common mistake made by many webmasters is to direct visitors to their main page. Instead of doing this, focus on creating a well-designed ‘teaser’ page that will create interest in your product without pushing visitors to purchase anything. The maximum amount of time that your site will be given to load is less than 30 seconds and the last thing you want is a slow loading page. It needs to: load quickly which will mean being very sparing with the graphics and animation. put across the greatest benefit for visiting you site very clearly. have a quick and easy way for surfers to bookmark your page. This is very important. When surfing for hits, you get into a kind of flow, one you don’t really want to interrupt. Having a favorites button will ensure that people who are pushed for time can always come back and view your page later. If you have links to other sites on your special page, it’s best if they open in new windows. That way your visitor doesn’t have to leave the hit exchange. It’s also a good idea to have some form of email capture facility on your page.

2. Develop a freebie and make visitors sign up to get it. Once you have your visitor’s attention, offer something for free that has intrinsic value. Some common items used by many webmasters are free ebooks, or contests for your products. By providing a free and useful item to your prospect, you attract their attention without forcing them to purchase anything at that moment. You have also obtained that visitor’s email address—after they sign up. Once this is done, send them an automatic response email that lets them know how to obtain their freebie. (One quick warning: On the entry form, let the person know that they are joining a mailing list. Don’t hide this fact, because you could be accused of spamming.)

3. Find good traffic exchange services and start surfing. After designing your page and including the freebie, browse for a few quality traffic exchange services. When searching, take into account the following factors:

Find sites that have good ratios. Sign up for services, such as www.megatraffic.biz that give you a fair ratio of sites which you visit, to times that your URL is displayed. Any traffic exchange service should have at least a 2:1 ratio. Study their anti-cheating policies. Any good traffic exchange service will have strict policies that prevent people from earning credits without actually viewing your site, including the use of robot/auto surf software.

Additionally, a good traffic exchange service will limit or prohibit the use of pop-ups, pop-unders, pop-exit pages or fly-ins. It should also prohibit sites that promote immoral, illegal or illicit URLs. To review recommended program terms, visit http://megatraffic.biz/agreement.asp

Referring others to the exchange should also benefit you, so be sure your exchange offers a referral program. Take advantage of your referral status. All it takes is one large site in your downline to create a stream of new visitors back to you.

4. Contact your visitors. Once you have collected a good database of visitors who are interested in your product, contact them. In the email, remind them of the freebie or contest that they joined. After that, create a sales message that discusses how your product or service can help fulfill their specific needs. Since this e-mail reaches them when they are not concerned with generating hits for their own site, you have a better chance of making a sale. If you follow these 4 steps and use the resources that are provided, you will see an increase in quality visitors and email subscriptions. Ultimately, you should generate more sales.

Give Me Quality Over Quantity Every Time

In the early days of developing my home business, I went for the numbers instead of focusing on targeting prospects. It took me a while to appreciate the importance of targeting (quality) instead of just going for the big numbers (quantity).

For online marketing, it helps greatly to get your website in front of people who are actually looking for the product, service, or opportunity that you are offering. This refers to the concept of marketing your sites to your target audience, rather than wasting your time, effort, and money on people who are not already interested in what you have to offer.

Be wary of "massive action" techniques in this era when many ISPs feel their hottest marketing theme is the blocking of incoming emails, which they decide their customers do not want to receive (they are the self appointed "information police").

Many of the sources of cheap, high volume leads supply you with leads that have absolutely no interest in your particular business (or product or service) and furthermore, have been put into the list in such a manner that can get you into trouble with your ISP because you are unwittingly spamming (many of these bulk lead lists are created by robots that crawl the Internet and harvest email addresses) the recipients.

In order to be effective in the promotion your particular proposition, whatever it is, you have to seek out your target market. This is as true online as it is offline. Just because you are able to reach huge numbers of people with your message on the Internet far more cheaply and quickly than you can offline, does this necessarily mean you should?

What's the point of devoting your time and energies to marketing to a massive group of people without first knowing whether they, as a group, have a general interest in what you are offering?

It is much more efficient and effective to first find out where your prospective customers congregate, and then target that congregation, than it is to use a shotgun approach and hope that one of your pellets will somehow find its target (you know... throw enough up against the wall and something is bound to stick). You will find that by selectively targeting your prospects before marketing to them, your conversion ratio (the proportion of your target market that takes positive action and actually purchases your product or service) will be much higher than the results you would otherwise achieve without first taking the time to target your prospects. Once again, quality wins out over quantity.

It seems that a great many webmasters have not stopped to ask themselves the all-important question...What is the purpose of my web site? For some reason, many of them seem to think that the purpose of their web site is to give away freebies. Or it could be to be a "showcase" for their products. Or it could be to create links to all kinds of resources. Or it could be to have fancy flash graphics and build a brand name.

One of the biggest mistakes people new to web design make is going for more "flash" than substance. They bog down their site with a bunch of fancy colored backgrounds, 3-D text, flash presentations, etc. If a visitor to your site is using a 56K connection and has wait to more than 8 seconds for it to load (which can easily happen on sites heavy with graphics), you can expect to lose about 1/3 of your visitors.

If you're a business, the purpose of your web site is to sell a product or service. Your web site should have one main focus. It should not be selling a dozen products, a dozen opportunities, or linking to a bunch of different affiliate programs. Presenting too many options has a tendency to confuse your visitor. When someone visits your site, it should be clearly obvious what one action you want him or her to take.
